Marilyn Scott/Mary Deloatch

This singer and guitarist's story shows the conflict lived by many black artists from the 20's until the early 60's. The Blues was a profane, lowlife kind of music, but they kept their faith to the Church and didn't want to upset their fellow believers. Mixing both sides wasn't an option, and many had two parallel careers as both Blues and Gospel artists, with a different stage name for each kind of music. This is the case of Marylin Scott / Mary Deloatch, who used the first name for the Blues and the second one for the Gospel. Here we find her two sides in recordings made in 1945-1951 with different accompaniments, from just the guitar to Big Bands. Both styles equally exciting. La historia de esta cantante y guitarrista ilustra el conflicto en el que vivieron muchos artistas negros entre los años 20 y casi los 60: El Blues era música profana y de "mala vida", pero seguían fieles a la Iglesia, con la que no querían cortar lazos. Mezclar ambas cosas estaba muy mal visto, y muchos mantuvieron dos carreras paralelas como artistas tanto de Blues como de Gospel, usando un nombre diferente para cada género.
